Requests from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and concerns about the ability of the wastewater treatment plant to consistently meet discharge limits prompted the city of Oelwein to evaluate their existing plant. Performance and capacity shortfalls led the City to construct a new wastewater treatment plant using the Sequencing Batch Reactor process.
The new plant was designed by FOX Engineering and the old treatment plant uses advanced preliminary treatment for grit and screenings removal, along with ultraviolet light for disinfection. The new treatment plant is treating average flows of approximately 1.5 MGD and producing effluent with BOD and TSS consistently under 3 mg/L and ammonia below 0.5 mg/L year round.
