“Planning is the most important aspect of any public works project.”

Similar to many other small communities in Iowa, the City of Glidden has had problems with poor stormwater drainage and flooding. At the north side of town, the city park has an existing stormwater pond but there is insufficient capacity for collection and detention of stormwater runoff from the large agricultural watershed that drains into the town. Additionally, the existing city storm sewer utilities consist of one County tile, many old field tiles with small diameters, and a limited number of storm intakes. Consequently, severe storm events cause flooding at the park that eventually spreads through town, inundating several roads and residential properties.
FOX Engineering completed a detailed site investigation and field survey to examine the existing drainage basins, detention pond capacity, storm sewer inventory, stormwater conveyance paths, and existing utilities and property owners in the project area. Several alternatives for stormwater improvements were evaluated and final design was completed for a two pond detention facility, new storm sewer system, and roadway improvements on the north and west sides of town. FOX Engineering provided construction administration and field inspections for the project. Construction was completed in the Fall of 2011.
