City of Grimes Street Improvements Project Wins Award

The North James Street Improvements project in Grimes, Iowa, was selected as a winner in the Urban Arterials & Collectors <15,000 SY category for this year’s Iowa Concrete Paving Association’s awards competition. Each year the Iowa Concrete Paving Association and the Iowa DOT recognize Iowa contractors and contracting authorities for the most outstanding PCC pavement projects constructed during the past season.

The awards ceremony was part of the 55th Annual Concrete Paving Workshop held February 6-8, 2019, at the Airport Holiday Inn, Des Moines, Iowa.

The project included removal of an existing 24-ft wide rural roadway section; it was replaced with a 3-lane urban section to include curb and gutter, storm sewer, pedestrian/bicyclist facilities, a signalized intersection, and replacement of the existing bridge with a box culvert at the Little Beaver Creek tributary crossing.

The existing 24-ft wide rural cross section was redesigned to implement sustainable practices, adapt to alternative transportation methods, and replace a dilapidated bridge. The complete street design incorporated the needs of pedestrians, motorists, and bicyclists.  Traffic calming and landscaping were also integrated into the project.

Alliance Construction Group was the low bid contractor for the $2,861,000 project.  Due to the poor condition of the existing bridge, the project received $1,000,000 in federal funding.

Certificates of Merit were awarded to the following FOX staff: Jessica Fisher, P.E., and John Gade, P.E., for their project management roles and Dave Nethers for his role as project observer.
