Iowa Rural Water 2020 Annual Conference

February 17, 2020 — February 19, 2020

Veterans Memorial Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center - Des Moines

Speaker: Jenny Ruddy, P.E.
Overview of available drinking water filtration technologies and media, discuss different methods for backwashing filters, and discuss filter operation optimization and troubleshooting to achieve maximum performance from a filter. Case studies will illustrate new filter installations, retrofits, and studies completed at Iowa water treatment plants.
Speaker: Laurie Twitchell, P.E., BCEE
Case Study:  Bench-Scale Testing and Process Modeling for the Reduction of UV Disinfection Peak Flow Requirements
Case study for the City of Boone on use of bench-scale testing, field testing and process modeling to reduce UV equipment requirements during peak flow events.  Bench-scale testing was conducted to measure rapid uptake rates of E. coli into mixed liquor as a prediction of effluent E. coli levels during peak hour flows.  Process modeling was used to simulate the impact of various storm modes on effluent E. coli levels and UV dosage requirements during peak flows.  Additional field testing including UVT and collimated beam testing was instrumental in making a case for reduced UV dosage requirements during peak flow to reduce UV equipment requirements and reduce project costs.
Learning Objectives:
Presents opportunities that may be available for facilities with high peak flows to reduce equipment and project costs when implementing UV disinfection.
What is Unique About Your Presentation:
Innovative approach to reducing disinfection equipment needs using bench-scale testing – this has not been done in Iowa.
